  1. Bathe, wear clean clothes and sit facing east on the day you first wear it.
  2. Light a diya or agarbatti in front of Lord Murugan or Lord Shiva.
  3. Hold the mala and chant the mantra below 108 times, or 11 times on busy days.
  4. Wear it around the neck so the beads rest comfortably.
  5. Keep both the beads and the metal caps dry. Remove it before bathing, exercise or swimming.
  6. Wipe off sweat with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and avoid perfume on the caps.

Mantra: Om Saravanabhavaya Namah

ॐ शरवणभवाय नमः

Chant 108 times (one mala). Invokes Lord Murugan, Shiva's son and the commander of the devas.
