Quick answer: In Vastu tradition, most yantras go in the north-east (the puja corner) or face east. Money-related yantras like Kuber go in the north. Planet yantras follow their planet's direction: Surya in the east, Shukra in the south-east, Hanuman in the south, Shani in the west. In a 2BHK flat you rarely get a perfect puja room, so this guide shows where each yantra fits in an ordinary flat, with a simple direction map.
First, find your directions properly
Most Vastu advice assumes you know where north is. In a flat, people often guess from the balcony or the building gate, and get it wrong.
- Open the compass app on your phone (most phones have one built in, or it shows in the maps app).
- Stand in the middle of the flat, away from the fridge, TV and steel almirah, which can throw the reading off.
- Note which wall faces north. Every other direction follows from that.
- Mark the four corners on a rough sketch of your flat: north-east, south-east, south-west, north-west.
The direction map
Read this as the floor plan of your flat seen from above, with north at the top.
|
North-west Usually not used for yantras. A good spot for a guest room or storage. |
North Kuber Yantra, Budh Yantra (study desk), Karz Mukti Yantra, Pyrite Tortoise |
North-east (the puja corner) Shree Yantra, Guru Yantram, Vaibhav Lakshmi Yantra, Baglamukhi Yantra |
|
West Shani Yantra (or in the puja ghar) |
Centre (Brahmasthan) Vastu Dosh Nivaran Yantra, or in the zone that has the problem. Keep the centre itself open and uncluttered. |
East Surya Yantra, Navgraha Yantra, Mangal Yantra, Santan Gopal Yantra, Mahakali Yantra |
|
South-west Usually the master bedroom. Avoid placing yantras here unless your astrologer suggests it. |
South Panchmukhi Hanuman Yantra, facing south or near the entrance |
South-east Shukra Yantra, 7 Horse Pyrite Frame (north, east or south-east wall) |
The main door
The entrance gets its own set of items, because this is where tradition says Lakshmi enters:
- Lakshmi Charan Paduka at the threshold or on the altar, toes pointing into the house.
- Shubh Labh Yantra above or beside the door, at or above eye level.
- Panchmukhi Hanuman Yantra if the main door faces south, which many families prefer to "guard".
Where each yantra goes in a typical 2BHK
| Yantra | Best spot in a flat | Faces | Day to place it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shree Yantra | Puja shelf in the living room's north-east | East or north-east | Friday or Diwali |
| Kuber Yantra | Near the almirah or cash box, north wall | North (east is fine) | Thursday or Dhanteras |
| Vyapar Vridhi / Shubh Labh | Home office desk or shop counter | North or east | Wednesday |
| Budh Yantra | Child's study table | North | Wednesday |
| Guru Yantram | Puja shelf or study, north-east | North-east | Thursday |
| Surya Yantra | Where morning light reaches, east wall | East | Sunday at sunrise |
| Shukra Yantra | Bedroom or puja shelf | South-east or east | Friday |
| Shani Yantra | Puja shelf | West | Saturday |
| Panchmukhi Hanuman | Near the main door or puja shelf | South | Tuesday or Saturday |
| Vastu Dosh Nivaran | Centre of the flat, or the problem zone | Any clean wall | Any calm morning |
When your puja corner isn't in the north-east
This is the most common situation in flats. The builder put the puja niche in the kitchen, or there is no niche at all. A few practical options:
- Use a wall shelf instead. A small shelf fixed on the north-east wall of the living room works better than a large mandir in the wrong corner.
- If you can't change the corner, change the facing. Keep the yantra so that it faces east or north-east, even if the shelf itself is elsewhere.
- Check what is on the other side of the wall. Avoid a wall that the yantra shares with a toilet or bathroom.
- Keep it above waist height. Yantras are not kept on the floor or below a shoe rack.
Five common mistakes
- Keeping several yantras crowded together on one small shelf. Give each one a little space.
- Placing a yantra behind the main door, where it gets hit every time the door opens.
- Letting dust settle. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth once a week; don't wash it with water or chemicals.
- Keeping it in the bedroom facing the bed. The exception is the Shukra Yantra, which tradition links with the bedroom.
- Placing a yantra and forgetting it. Tradition pairs each yantra with a mantra, lit diya or flower, even if only on its day. The mantra for each one is on its product page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep more than one yantra at home?
Yes. Many homes keep a Shree Yantra in the puja corner, a Kuber Yantra in the north and a Hanuman Yantra near the door. Place each in its own direction rather than stacking them together.
Should a yantra be on the wall or on the altar?
Both are fine. Small yantras usually sit on a clean red or yellow cloth on the altar. Larger ones, and the 7-horse frame, go on a wall at eye level or above.
My flat faces south. Is that a problem?
No. A south-facing entrance is very common in cities. Tradition suggests a Panchmukhi Hanuman Yantra near the door and keeping the entrance clean and well lit.
Which yantra should I keep if I can only buy one?
The Shree Yantra is the safest single choice for a home, and the Vyapar Vridhi or Shubh Labh Yantra for a shop or office.
Do your yantras come energised?
Yes. Every yantra is cleansed and energised before dispatch at no extra cost, and we can do it in your name if you add it at checkout.
