Description

The Karungali Mala 8mm is a traditional mala made of smooth, dark 8mm Karungali beads. Karungali is the Tamil name for ebony wood, and malas made from it are common in South Indian homes and temples.

Karungali is closely tied to Lord Murugan (Kartikeya), and in some families also to Lord Shiva. In astrology it is linked with Mars (Mangal), the graha of courage and action, which is also Murugan's planet. People wear a Karungali mala to feel grounded and steady, and many use it for counting japa during prayer.

The 8mm bead size is a comfortable middle size. It is easy to hold between the fingers during japa and sits neatly around the neck for everyday wear or temple visits. Men and women both wear it.

Benefits

In South Indian devotional practice, Karungali is traditionally worn to:

  • Feel grounded and composed through the day
  • Keep count and focus during japa
  • Seek Lord Murugan's protection
  • Build courage and discipline, linked with Mars
  • Carry a reminder of your sankalp to temple and work
How to wear · mantra & affirmation
  1. On the first day, bathe, wear clean clothes and sit facing east, ideally around sunrise.
  2. Hold the mala in your right hand and set a clear sankalp (personal intention).
  3. Chant the Murugan mantra below, moving one bead at a time with your thumb.
  4. Wear it around the neck, or keep it aside only for japa if you prefer.
  5. Keep the wooden beads dry. Remove the mala before bathing, swimming or heavy sweating.
  6. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth and keep it away from perfume and detergents.

Mantra: Om Saravanabhavaya Namah

ॐ शरवणभवाय नमः

Chant 108 times (one mala). A mantra to Lord Murugan, also called Saravanabhava.

Affirmation: I stay calm and act with courage. My daily practice keeps me steady.

Auspicious day

Tuesday. Tuesday (Mangalvar) belongs to Mars, Lord Murugan's planet, so it is the most followed day for first wearing Karungali, ideally around sunrise after a bath. Sashti tithi or a Murugan festival day are also chosen.

Frequently asked questions

What is Karungali?
Karungali is the Tamil name for ebony wood. It is used for malas and bracelets in Murugan and Shiva worship.

Is 8mm a good bead size for japa?
Yes. 8mm beads are easy to hold and move between the fingers, and they are not too heavy to wear around the neck.

Can I wear Karungali with Rudraksha?
Yes. Karungali and Rudraksha are often worn together, especially by Shiva and Murugan devotees.

Can I wear it while bathing?
It is better not to. Water and soap can dull the wood, so take it off before bathing or swimming.

Is it energised before dispatch?
Yes. Every order is cleansed and energised before it ships, at no extra cost.

Can it be energised in my name?
Yes. Open "Energise in my name" above, add your name and, if you like, your date of birth. There is no extra charge.

Yes. You can pay by UPI, card, net banking or cash on delivery. Pay online and save 5% (up to ₹50). Cash on delivery is available on orders from ₹399 with a ₹49 COD charge.

Can I return it?
Unused products can be returned within 7 days of delivery.
